Self-Initiated Research

Research Aims

To gain a more holistic understanding of the following:

  1. Public understanding of mental wellbeing

  2. Public perception of mental illnesses

  3. Current institutional approaches towards mental health

Introduction

We conducted our self-initiated research on the mental health of Hong Kong from 2019-2020. We hoped to better understand the status quo of mental health in our city in order to promote mental health more effectively.

Research Questions

  1. How is the public’s mental health?

  2. How accurate is the public’s understanding of mental wellbeing?

  3. How accurate is the public’s understanding of mental illnesses?

  4. How does the public perceive mental illnesses and the mentally ill?

  5. What are current institutional approaches towards mental health?

  6. How effective are these approaches?

Research Methods

  1. Database research: Through investigating secondary sources such as books and research papers, we gained a brief understanding of existing governmental policies and the current mental well-being of Hong Kong citizens

  2. Questionnaires (over 400 responses): Our questionnaire quantified Hong Kong citizens’ mental health status and public perception of mental illness

  3. Street Interviews (over 200 entries): Focusing on personal feelings and thoughts of Hong Kong citizens, street interviews were conducted to gain an understanding of an individual’s real-life experiences and subjective perceptions of mental health

  4. In-depth Interviews (over 10): To gather personal experiences and professional knowledge related to mental health in Hong Kong, we conducted interviews with various stakeholders, including recovering/recovered mentally ill patients, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, related government officials and related NGOs

General Findings

  • The public’s mental health wellbeing is average. On average, self-reported happiness was 6.60 out of 10, while self-reported satisfaction was 6.85 out of 10. Sources of stress are closely linked and reflect the socio-economic situation of Hong Kong.

  • People have a basic understanding of mental health and mental illnesses, but more has to be done

  • Hong Kong citizens still have certain misconceptions about mental illnesses

  • People are more accepting towards the mentally ill and only a small proportion of Hong Kong citizens still holds a strong stigma towards the mentally ill

  • In general, people lack a basic understanding of the mental health support system and the services provided by non-governmental organizations. Over-reliance on the public health system results in delayed and inadequate treatment and follow-up in the entire system.

To present our findings, we have published interview clips with the professionals, as well as publishing a documentary compiling their responses:
